Chapter 08: DCAs, Mute Groups & Fader Management

Modern live sound mixing requires managing 30 to 40 channels simultaneously under intense time pressure. Navigating multiple layers to adjust individual instruments is impossible during fast-paced performances. The Behringer X32 and Midas M32 provide two primary organizational control tools: 8 Digitally Controlled Amplifiers (DCAs) with DCA Spill, and 6 dedicated Master Mute Groups.

This chapter details DCA architecture, the critical pre/post-fader send behavior gotcha, DCA Spill workflow, and mute group strategies.

1. What is a DCA (Digitally Controlled Amplifier)?

A DCA functions as a remote control for a group of channel faders. Borrowed from analog VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) design, no audio signal ever passes through a DCA.

Example: three drum channels assigned to DCA 1 (Drums), and the DCA fader pulled down by 4 dB:

Channel Channel fader DCA 1 Effective level
Ch 1 – Kick 0 dB -4 dB -4 dB
Ch 2 – Snare -6 dB -4 dB -10 dB
Ch 3 – Toms -3 dB -4 dB -7 dB

The balance between the channels stays exactly the same.

Why Use DCAs Instead of Subgroups?

  • Zero DSP Overhead: DCAs consume no internal mix buses, EQs, or dynamics blocks.
  • Stereo Panning Preserved: Channels retain their individual pan positions across the Main LR stereo spectrum.
  • Fast Re-assignment: Channels can be assigned to or removed from DCAs in seconds without re-routing buses.

2. Standard DCA Layout for Live Mixing

A proven 8-DCA configuration for live concerts and house-of-worship services:

DCA Name Member Channels Mixing Purpose
DCA 1 DRUMS Kick, Snare, Toms, Hi-Hat, Overheads Controls overall drum volume in one fader.
DCA 2 BASS Bass DI, Bass Amp Mic, Synth Bass Glues the low-end rhythm section.
DCA 3 GUITARS Electric Guitars (Stage Left / Right), Acoustic Guitars Balances guitars against keys.
DCA 4 KEYS / TRACKS Keyboards, Piano, Synth, Playback Tracks Adjusts electronic backing elements.
DCA 5 LEAD VOX Lead Vocalist 1 & 2, Pastor, Key Speaker Keeps main vocals riding cleanly on top.
DCA 6 BG VOX Backing Vocalists, Choir Balances vocal harmonies behind lead vocals.
DCA 7 FX RETURNS FX 1L/R through FX 4L/R (Reverbs & Delays) Overall wetness / ambience level.
DCA 8 BAND MASTER All instruments (excluding spoken word / pastor) Instant band-vs-speech volume ducking.

How to Assign Channels to a DCA:

  1. Console Surface Shortcut:
    • Press and hold the SELECT button of the desired DCA (e.g., DCA 1).
    • While holding DCA 1 Select, press the illuminated SELECT buttons of all input channels you wish to add.
    • Release the DCA Select button. All chosen channels are now linked to that DCA.
  2. Channel Home Screen:
    • Select any input channel, press HOME, and navigate to the DCA Groups column. Use the encoder to toggle DCAs 1 through 8.

3. The Critical DCA Gotcha: Pre-Fader vs. Post-Fader Sends!

This is one of the most common operational errors on digital consoles:

Send type Typical use Does the DCA affect it?
Post-fader sends Reverbs, delays, broadcast matrix Yes — pulling down the drum DCA also lowers the drum reverb sends
Pre-fader sends Stage wedges, in-ear monitors No — pulling down the vocal DCA leaves the in-ears completely unchanged

The Real-World Disaster Scenario:

A lead singer gestures from the stage that their vocal microphone is blasting their ears. The FOH engineer pulls down DCA 5 (Lead Vox) by 10 dB. The house audience can now barely hear the singer, but the singer's in-ear volume has not changed by a single decibel.

Rule: Never use DCA faders to adjust stage monitors or in-ear mixes! Stage monitors are fed pre-fader. To alter monitor levels, use Sends on Faders on that musician's mix bus.

4. Firmware 4.x DCA Spill Feature

In firmware 4.x, the X32 introduced DCA Spill, eliminating the need to scroll through fader banks to locate individual instruments.

Step Action Result
1 Press the SELECT button of a DCA (e.g. DCA 1) The left 16 faders instantly show that DCA's members
2 Adjust the spilled faders e.g. Kick In, Kick Out, Snare Top, Snare Bottom, Rack Tom, Floor Tom, Hi-Hat, Overheads — buses assigned to the DCA (such as drum subgroups) spill out too
3 Press the DCA's SELECT button again The left faders return to their normal bank

5. Master Mute Groups (Groups 1–6)

Located directly below the main 7" display, the console features 6 dedicated Master Mute Group buttons. Pressing a Mute Group button instantly mutes all assigned channels, buses, or FX returns simultaneously.

Standard Mute Group Configuration:

Mute group Name Mutes
1 All band Drum, bass, guitar and keyboard channels
2 Vocals All singing microphones
3 FX mute All reverb and delay returns — essential
4 Stage DIs Acoustic guitars, bass DI and keyboard lines
5 Media / playback Walk-in music and video playback
6 All mute Emergency mute for the whole stage

Why "FX MUTE" is Mandatory:

Between songs, when the lead vocalist or pastor begins talking to the congregation or audience, having a giant 3.5-second hall reverb tail on their speech sounds amateurish and destroys intelligibility.

  • Assign the return channels of FX 1 through FX 4 to MUTE GRP 3 (FX MUTE).
  • Tap MUTE GRP 3 the instant the song finishes. Spoken dialogue is dry and pristine.
  • Tap MUTE GRP 3 again right as the next downbeat begins to restore lush reverbs.

How to Assign Channels to Mute Groups:

  1. Press the MUTE GRP menu button next to the screen.
  2. Hold down the physical Mute Group button (1–6) on the surface.
  3. While holding it down, press the channel MUTE buttons on any channels, buses, or FX returns you want assigned.
  4. Release the button. The red mute LEDs will now flash in sync whenever that Mute Group is activated.

6. Mute System Preferences (Setup Menu)

Navigate to SETUP → CONFIG to configure mute behavior:

  • Mute Pre-Fader Sends (Yes / No):
    • When set to NO: Muting a channel only mutes the house PA; the musician still hears themselves in their stage monitors.
    • When set to YES: Muting a channel silences the microphone everywhere, including all stage wedges and in-ear monitors. (Recommended for live sound to prevent open feedback when mics are placed on stands).
  • Hard Mute vs. Soft DCA Mute:
    • If a channel is muted by a DCA, its mute button flashes.
    • If a channel is muted locally on its own fader strip, its mute button lights solid red. Unmuting the DCA will not unmute a channel that was manually muted on its own strip!
